
Stop Guessing Your Bathroom Heater Wattage
Nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. It’s a shock to the system. But getting the right infrared heater isn’t about fancy physics—it’s just about picking the right tool for the size of your room. If you go too low, you’ll be shivering while the heater struggles to keep up. Go too high, and you’re basically paying to overheat your ceiling, which is a waste of money and hard on the equipment.
Finding the right fit
Think of it in three simple buckets. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 400W to 600W lamp is plenty. It keeps things cozy without overloading your electrical system. For your average bathroom (4m² to 8m²), look for something in the 800W to 1200W range. Now, if you have a massive master bath or a wet room over 10m², you’ve got more surface area for heat to escape. In those cases, you’ll want a high-output unit (1500W+) or maybe a few smaller lamps spread out.
A quick word on IP55 and breathing room
You’ll see “IP55” on the box. All that really means is that the unit is built to handle dust and the occasional splash of water. It keeps the moisture away from the electrics so you don’t have to worry about short circuits in a steamy room. But here’s the thing: the heater still needs to breathe. Even with that protective shell, the heat sink needs airflow. If you cram a 1200W lamp into a tight, suffocating ceiling void, you’re going to fry the ballast. Give it some space.
Comfort vs. Intensity
High-wattage lamps are great because they hit you with heat instantly. But if the lamp is too low, it can feel a bit oppressive—like you’re standing too close to a campfire. To avoid those annoying “hot spots,” try using two lower-wattage lamps instead of one big one. It spreads the warmth across the floor much more evenly. Just a heads-up: check your breaker capacity before you start adding multiple units. You don’t want the power tripping right when you’re mid-shower.
