We spent a lot of time looking at how a piglet’s skin actually absorbs heat. Instead of just dumping power into the air, we built a lamp that targets the specific way porcine tissue takes in warmth. It means less wasted electricity and, more importantly, no more surface burns on the animals.
The Science (Without the Headache)
Here’s the thing: standard lamps often throw out too much short-wave radiation. For a newborn piglet, that’s just too aggressive. It’s like standing too close to a campfire; you get scorched before you actually feel warm. We tweaked the filament and the quartz glass to shift that heat into the medium-wave range. Now, the warmth actually penetrates the body. We aren’t just chasing high wattage numbers here. We care about how much heat actually hits every square inch. That’s the difference between a piglet that’s cozy and one that’s overheating.
The Gear and the Trade-offs
Pig barns are brutal. Between the dust and the ammonia, most equipment just gives up. That’s why we used high-purity quartz tubes. They don’t cloud over or burn out nearly as fast. But a heads-up on the power: these units hit hard and fast. Because the power density is so high, they heat up quickly. But you’ve got to make sure your wiring can handle that initial surge. If your electrical panel is old or undersized, you’re going to trip your breakers. Do yourself a favor—use heavy-gauge wiring and high-temp sockets. You don’t want your housing melting.
Getting Them Running
Installing these is easy. They’re basically a drop-in replacement for the infrared setups you probably already have. Just wire them into your current controllers and you’re good to go. Once they’re on, you’ll notice the difference immediately. The “heat curtain” under the lamp feels much more consistent. And because the heat is so much more focused, you can often get away with using fewer lamps to keep the pen at the right temperature. That means your total power draw goes down, which is a win for your electric bill.
